Roman RAT Aberystwyth Run Saturday 16th August 2014

After a rather wet week, the weather for this month's Rat Run was as predicted by the Met Office, dry but cloudy, breezy and somewhat chilly.

Two Triumph riders left Bill Smiths Triumph at 9:30am and headed to the Raven Cafe at Whitchurch to meet two more riders, also on Triumphs. Taking the A49 southbound from the Raven, the aim for the first proper stop was Laila's Cafe in Craven Arms to meet another Triumph rider travelling up from Stourbridge to join the ride.

After some light refreshments at Laila's cafe, the group of now five riders left Craven Arms westbound via the B4368 and B4367 before turning west at the A4113 through Knighton, onto the A488 before joining the A44 which led to the intended lunch time destination of Aberystwyth.

The riders passed through Crossgates, Rhayader, Llangurig, arriving at the promenade in Aberystwyth for lunch shortly after 1pm where the group of five became eight (being joined by a Triumph, Ducati and a Yamaha that had set off later and decided to join the ride at the lunch stop).

Despite a fresh wind, the promenade and PD Diners cafe were both busy as folks enjoyed a typical English summers day.

The riders needed to fill their steeds with fuel as they left Aberystwyth in order to make it all the way home. The route took a northerly direction up the A487 to Machynlleth, with a loop over the mountains on the A489 and A470 via Mallwyd to Dolgellau before then taking the A494 to stop at Bala overlooking the lake for a well deserved cup of tea/coffee.

Leaving Bala, the riders took the A494 towards Corwen before taking the A5104 via Llandegla and home.

A good day riding, meeting new friends and old. Till next time...ride safe.
