Falling on Easter Saturday and in the middle of the Easter school holidays, it was not unexpected that it would be a small group of riders that assembled at Bill Smiths Triumph dealership in Chester for this months RAT run, with a number of regular riders offering their apologies due to family commitments.
Three riders, on a mix of two Street Triples and a Speed Triple, gathered at Smithies on what was a bright but quite chilly day to take advantage of the recently reopened onsite butty van before setting off at 9:30am to head to Bala lake to meet another rider (on a Ducati).
At Bala lake, it was agreed to head to Aberystwyth for lunch. But with no one knowing what state the promenade or the motorcycle park was in after last years storms it was decided to pause at a café in Machynlleth for elevenses, just in case we had to push on to Elan Valley for lunch.
However, on arrival at the promenade in Aberystwyth, we were pleased to see that much of the damage we’d seen on TV last year had been repaired and that the motorcycle park was open along with PD's Diner with its al-fresco terrace overlooking the beach. Sat in the sun eating fish and chips, chatting about this and that, and watching the world go by was a great way to chillax.
Leaving Aberystwyth, the group travelled along the A44 to Devils Bridge. And after a quick fuel stop, the riders took the scenic single track mountain road to the Elan Valley Visitor Centre. The views from this road are absolutely fabulous and it made a nice change to ride the route the opposite way to that usually travelled by the pack when visiting Elan Valley.
The riders stopped briefly at the Visitor Centre but given the long queue in the café it was decided to push on to the café at Crossgates roundabout for light refreshments, a familiar haunt.
It was about 4pm when the group finally left Crossgates for the 20 mile blast up the A483 twisties to Newtown before continuing up the A483 back to Chester and home. A 220 mile round trip which was enjoyed by all.
The next RAT ride is the Arrive and Ride run on Sunday 4th May starting at Bill Smiths Triumph dealership and departing at 9:30am.
Till next time…ride safe.
